Lady Vikings notch 10-point win over Kellogg
GOCC wins second straight home game on Sophomore Day.
The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team put all the pieces together Saturday in a 57-47 victory over visiting Kellogg.
Freshman Kennedy Lockett had another outstanding offensive outing as she led the team with 16 points to go along with a pair of assists.
Shortly before being recognized along with her classmates on Sophomore Day, Kaytlin Smith turned in a gritty performance with 12 points, a team-high nine rebounds, a steal and a block — serving as a defensive catalyst in an overall solid team effort. Glen Oaks only turned the ball over 12 times while coming up with 22 takeaways on defense. The Vikings shot 40.4 percent from the field and outscored Kellogg 21-8 off turnovers.
The Vikings ran out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter before the Bruins settled in offensively in the second frame and went on an 18-5 run to claim a 20-19 lead — their one and only advantage in the contest.
A Jayla Parker-Vincent 3-pointer put GOCC back out front and the Vikings got a half-ending spark with a triple by Amanda Barber and a drive by Lockett to make it a 27-20 lead at the break.
Smith shined in the third quarter with three field goals and Weller hit a 3-pointer as Glen Oaks continued to control the game and entered the final frame with a 46-32 cushion.
Jordyn Partee finished the game with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Weller made her mark with seven points, six boards, three assists, four steals and a pair of blocks. Both Barber and Tracy Ackley had four points, Parker-Vincent finished with three and Kylie Quist had two. Quist added five rebounds and three assists and Ackley had two rebounds, Barber finished with three boards, two assists and three steals.
It was the second straight win for the Vikings, who are now 7-17 overall and 3-8 in the MCCAA Western Conference. Glen Oaks heads to Grand Rapids Wednesday, February. 19, for a 5:30 tipoff.
