Kellogg women rally at home vs. GOCC
Bruins erase 10-point deficit in fourth quarter.
BATTLE CREEK — The Kellogg Community College women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit to start the fourth quarter to defend home court and beat Glen Oaks 54-52.
Dayshauna Crowly scored 11 of her game-high 25 points over the final 10 minutes, but she wasn't the only Bruin coming up with big shots down the stretch. Makayla Rain was another offensive anchor in the fourth quarter, which included a 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining that gave Kellogg a 53-52 lead — its first since the 2:50 mark in the opening stanza. A Crowly free throw put Kellogg up 54-42 with three seconds remaining and Glen Oaks was unable to get a shot off before the horn.
Kennedy Lockett scored 13 points, an assist and six rebounds to pace the Vikings, who slipped to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in the MCCAA Western Conference. Like Lockett, Amanda Barber hit a trio of 3-pointers on her way to nine points. She added three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Kylie Quist finished with eight points, two assists, a rebound and a steal, and Chelsi Zyla came off the bench with seven points, three rebounds and an assist. Kaytlin Smith had five points and an astounding 17 rebounds to accompany three blocks and a steal.
Glen Oaks outscored the Bruins 24-3 from behind the arc and 20-2 in bench points. However, Kellogg, which improved to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play, got to the foul line 10 more times than GOCC and capitalized with an 11-4 advantage at the stripe. The Bruins also topped the Vikings in points off turnovers (15-7) and points in the paint (32-14).
