Viking women win on Black Friday

CENTREVILLE — The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team knocked down 11 3-point baskets and clamped down defensively Friday for a 67-49 victory over visiting Alpena.
Sophomore guard Amanda Barber and freshman guard Jordyn Partee each scored 15 points for the Vikings, which improved to 3-5 overall. Barber connected on five 3-pointers and Partee mixed in slashing to the rim, scores off turnovers, a triple and free throws to reach the same mark.
Kylie Quist finished with 12 points for GOCC, which trailed 18-13 in the second quarter. But a Barber 3-pointer and a Quist jumper tied the game at 18-18. The Vikings never trailed again.
Glen Oaks finished out the first half with a 16-3 run to make it a 34-22 advantage at intermission. Chelsi Zyla hit five free throws in the third quarter, while Zilm made a 3-pointer, Kaytlin Smith added a bucket and Partee reigered five points in the frame to make it a 49-37 game heading into the final stanza.
Quist knocked down two big triples and Barber added another from behind the arc in the fourth quarter to keep the Lumberjacks at bay.
Kennedy Lockett ended the night with seven points, Zilm, Smith and Zyla each had six, and Kulayjah Weller had one.
Partee led the squad with five rebounds and Smith pulled down four. Quist dished out a team-high three assists and Partee came away with five steals. Weller added two blocks in the contest.
Glen Oaks shot 35.5 percent from the field and limited Alpena to 27.3 percent.
