Glen Oaks drops MCCAA opener.
The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team battled host Marian University Ancilla Wednesday down to the final second but lost, 50-49, to begin Michigan Community College Athletic Association play.
Trailing 48-41 with 2:43 left to play, Kamryn Washington banged in a critical 3-pointer to stay within striking distance. Washington led the Vikings with a game-high 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
After a defensive stop and a rebound by Amanda Barber, the Vikings pushed the ball up the floor with Washington finding Morgan Kurdziel with a long pass to the baseline. Kurdziel finished with a nice move to the bucket to make it a 48-46 Ancilla lead.
Glen Oaks stood tall defensively on the Chargers' next possession, forcing a desperation heave for a shot clock violation with 1:38 left to play, but the Vikings turned the ball over on the other end.
With just under a minute remaining, Glen Oaks got another defensive stop but turned the ball over in transition. Ancilla tacked on a free throw with 20 seconds to go to make it a 49-46 Chargers lead.
On the other end, Glen Oaks missed on a 3-point attempt but Kaytlin Smith came up with a loose ball in the lane that appeared to give the Vikings life. However, officials awarded a timeout to Ancilla with 8.8 seconds remaining even though the Chargers never had possession of the ball.
Glen Oaks was forced to put Ancilla on the line and the Chargers made one attempt to increase the lead to 50-46 with 3.5 seconds left on the clock. On the Vikings' final possession, Barber hoisted a 3-pointer and was fouled on the play. She missed the first FT attempt, made the second and intentionally missed the third. Lilyana Coleman came up with the rebound and putback at the buzzer for the final score.
Sarah DeKoning finished with eight points, three rebounds and two assists, and Barber ended the night with seven points, three steals and four boards. Both Kurdziel and Coleman chipped in six points. Kurdziel added two blocks and four rebounds, and Coleman had seven boards and a block.
Smith registered two points, two blocks, a steal and three rebounds, Kylie Quist had two points, a steal, two assists and two boards, Abby Youmans recorded two points, a block and a board, and Chelsi Zyla had one point.
