Skippers slip past Glen Oaks
St. Clair claims road win over Vikings
Despite being held to just 23 points in the second half by an energized Glen Oaks defense Monday, the St. Clair Community College women's basketball team escaped with a 59-53 non-conference road victory.
Glen Oaks held a 17-16 lead after the first quarter. Sarah DeKoning scored eight of her nine points for the Vikings (7-5) in the first 10 minutes. But the Skippers (9-1) outscored GOCC 20-7 in the second quarter to take a 36-24 lead into the halftime break. A 13-6 run in the third quarter increased St. Clair's advantage to 19 to start the fourth quarter.
Aggressive drives to the basket by Morgan Kurdziel, who finished with a team-high 10 ponts for Glen Oaks, and Chelsi Zyla, who scored all seven of her points in the final 10 minutes, helped the Vikings begin to close the gap and gain some momentum. Alea Fisher, who registered six points in the game, knocked down a trio of free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot attempt, and Zyla drained a triple to to make it an eight-point game with just under a minute to play.
Amanda Barber hit a 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left to make it a two-possession game but St. Clair was able to run out the clock. Barber finished with nine points.
Also scoring for Glen Oaks were Kylie Quist with six points, Lilyana Coleman with four and Kaytlin Smith with two.
Glen Oaks resumes play January 9 at Andrews University.
