A gritty Glen Oaks Community College softball team battled over the weekend in Marysville, MI at the Region XII District B Championship, bouncing back from a Friday loss with a come-frome-behind victory Saturday against Cuyahoga. But in an elimination game later in the afternoon against Alpena, GOCC's season ended abruptly as Alpena rallied in the bottom of the seventh and moved on with a walk-off single.
The Vikings finished the season with a 17-20 record under the guidance of first-year head coach Terry Reynolds and first-year assistant coach Melissa Miller after losing eight of their first nine games to start the year.
Thursday
Oakland 7, Glen Oaks 0
Oakland scored five runs in the second inning for a comfortable lead against a Glen Oaks squad that only mustered four hits in the game.
Audrie Dugan led things off in the circle for GOCC and the hurler surrendered seven hits and seven runs (four earned) over six innings, striking out three and walking none. Oakland's Perry allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking three.
Sage Pruett, Timmery Hunter (2), and Dugan each collected hits for Glen Oaks.
Perry provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Oakland CC with three runs batted in. The pitcher went 3-for-3 on the day.
Friday
Glen Oaks 7, Cuyahoga 5
Cuyahoga got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Gabriella Nieves doubled to center field, Isabella Kepple singled down the left field line, Sammi Zabak singled to center field, and Mikayla Doucette hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.
Audrie Dugan homered to left field, scoring two runs in the top of the third for Glen Oaks.
The Vikings made the score 5-4 in the top of the fourth after Sage Pruett doubled, scoring two runs, and Aimee Reinhardt singled, scoring one run.
Dugan walked and Timmery Hunter singled in the top of the fifth, and with one out, Cassidi Parham singled to right field to drive in a run and make it a 6-4 GOCC advantage. Bella Monsma followed with a sacrifice fly that pushed home Brianna Wiley to go ahead 7-4.
Cassidi Parham and Dugan each collected two hits for the Vikings. Pruett and Dugan both drove in two runs for GOCC.
Blanchard was charged wtih four hits and three earned runs early before Reinhardt went the final seven innings with five hits and one earned run surrendered. She finished with four strikeouts and four walks for the Vikings in the win.
Alpena 5, Glen Oaks 4
Alpena opened the scoring in the fourth after Magdalyn Sandoval doubled, scoring two runs.
Glen Oaks flipped the script in the top of the sixth when Audrie Dugan homered to left field, scoring three runs, and Brianna Wiley singled, scoring one run.
But a victory slipped out of GOCC's grasp after missed oppurtinies led to no runs in the top of the seventh and Alpena got it done at the plate in cruch time in the bottom half of the frame.
Alpena got a leadoff double and put the runner in scoring position after a wild pitch with one out. Alpena's Kirstin Neubecker doubled on a line drive to left field to tie the game at 4-4. With the bases loaded, Alaina Nuebecker singled up the middle to drive in her sister for the game-winning run.
Aimee Reinhardt started in the circle for Glen Oaks. She allowed five hits and two runs over four innings, striking out one and walking none. Dugan tossed the last 2 1/3 innings with six hits and two earned runs allowed. She struck out two batters and walked two.
Glen Oaks piled up 11 hits in the game. Dugan drove the middle of the lineup, leading GOCC with three runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-4 on the day. Timmery Hunter led Glen Oaks with three hits in four at bats. Grace Blanchard and Bailey Trail each collected multiple hits for the Vikings.
