Glen Oaks wins two crucial games at home.
Glen Oaks softball picked up a big home sweep Sunday against Kalamazoo Valley, winning 8-6 and 7-6 contests. Both games ended in dramatic fashion with walk offs. The Vikings end the week second in the MCCAA Western Conference at 10-6 and sit at 15-9 overall.
Game one had Glen Oaks open ahead with a two run second inning, but the Cougars matched in the fourth. GOCC reclaimed the lead with one in the fifth, but KVCC countered with one in the sixth. Kalamazoo Valley then went ahead for the first time with three in the top of the seventh inning.
Down 6-3, the Vikings rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sierra Smith singled in Alea Fisher and Sage Pruett doubled home Smith to make it 6-5. Down to their last out, Kacie Scott ended the game with a three-run walk off home run to right field.
Glen Oaks had seven hits, four of which went for extra bases. Smith and Aimee Reinhardt had doubles to go along with Pruett's double and Scott's homer. Ava Mejia pitched 6.1 innings and struck out three, allowing nine hits, five earned runs, and one walk.
Game two saw the Vikings ahead initially with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Kalamazoo Valley went ahead with three in the second and one in the fourth. Glen Oaks rallied with a four run fourth inning and added one in the fifth on an Reinhardt solo home run.
The lead held at 6-4 until the Cougars got two back in the seventh inning, forcing extras. The Vikings would win it with one in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Alea Fisher singled on a fly ball to right field. Fisher would go on to steal second base and she advanced to third and would ultimately score on a KVCC throwing error.
Reinhardt had a homer, double, and single for two RBI and two runs. Pruett doubled and singled, scoring once with one RBI. Scott, Fisher, and Melina Ragotzy each had a hit and a run. The Vikings outhit the Cougars 9-6.
Dakota Sigler pitched all eight innings with four strikeouts, six hits allowed, six runs, three earned runs, and six walks.
Next weekend, Glen Oaks has two home doubleheaders on the docket. The Vikings meet Jackson College Friday and Marian University's Ancilla Saturday.
