GOCC men prevail against Kellogg
Roach leads Vikings with 29 points on Sophomore Day.
Darrius Roach did not disappoint on a day designed to highlight his Glen Oaks career. Following Sophomore Day festivities Saturday at home, Roach scorched Kellogg for 29 points to guide the Vikings to an 82-77 victory and guarantee a spot in the postseason.
Now at 14-11 overall and 7-4 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association's Western Conference, Glen Oaks punched its ticket to district tournament play with three regular season games remaining.
Roach wa 8-for-13 from the floor against the Bruins, which included five 3-pointers. He went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the second half to help preserve the win.
The Vikings led 36-32 at halftime after a 10-point effort from Roach, a pair of 3-pointers by Nate Keil, four buckets from Mike Phillips, six by Amauri Moore, four from Akin Smith and a basket by sophomore Aaron Humphrey Jr.
Glen Oaks went on a run early in the second half as Moore scored and Roach hit a pair of 3-pointers. Phillips added a trey and a Smith hesitation move put Glen Oaks up 56-45. Moments later, Will Jamison knocked down a trey and Taurus Baugh made a bucket for a 12-point advantage.
Kellogg eventually climbed back to tie the game at 69-69 but Glen Oaks got back out front for good after a nice assist from Baugh to Moore on a layup. Roach was automatic from the stripe after that and Baugh drained two key free throws to seal the win.
Moore ended the night with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and seven rebounds. He added a block and two assists. Humphrey Jr. led the team with nine rebounds to go with four assists, and six points. Keil had nine total points, three boards, two assists and a steal, while Phillips contributed eight points, an assist and a steal.
Jamison was next in line with seven points and three assists, Smith had six points, three rebounds, an assist and two blocks, and Ananias Evans played a big role defensively down the stretch in his brief time on the floor.
The Vikings shot 47.6 percent from 3-point land, 47.5 percent from the floor and a season-best 87.5 percent from the stripe.
