Glen Oaks men fall in OT at Lake Land
Vikings come up just short on the road.
MATTOON, ILL. — The Glen Oaks Community College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road Saturday, 112-106 in overtime against host Lake Land College. Darrius Roach led GOCC with 18 points as six of his teammates were close behind in double figures.
The Vikings jumped out to an 21-13 lead with 12:42 to play in the first half. Will Jamison had a couple big 3-pointers midway through the frame, including a deep ball with around 10 minutes to play that gave Glen Oaks a 30-20 advantage. Lake Land went on a 12-2 run to make it 32-32 in the next two and a half minutes. An Amauri Moore bucket on the baseline and a jumper from Aaron Humphrey Jr. put Glen Oaks back out front by four with 5:43 left in the first half.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Lake Land tied the game at 38-38. In traffic, Moore muscled in a basket for a Glen Oaks answer. Nate Keil converted from behind the arc and Glen Oaks pulled ahead 43-40 just under the 3-minute mark. Darrius Roach drained two triples in a row for a 51-44 GOCC lead in the final minute. A turnover, however, led to points on the other end by the Lakers to make it a 51-46 game at intermission.
Lake Land started the second half with an 6-1 run before Akin Smith hit a 3-pointer for Glen Oaks. Mike Phillips hit a big shot from long range to give the Vikings a 65-56 cushion with 14:24 in the second half. The Vikings would stay out front by a couple possessions for the next several minutes, and a layup by Taurus Baugh at the 6:15 mark put GOCC up 82-73.
The Lakers answered with a 10-4 run to make it a 3-point game with a minute to play in regulation. But Moore banged in a bucket in the paint with 30 seconds left and was fouled. He hit the foul shot to complete the three-point play and give the Vikings an 89-83 lead. Lake Land scored on a layup on the other end eight seconds later and then intentionally fouled Roach. He'd hit the front end of a 1-and-1 but couldn't get the second to go. Off the defensive rebound, the Lakers hustled down the floor and quickly knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a 90-88 Glen Oaks lead with 13 seconds left.
Roach was fouled again on the inbound and he made both foul shots for a 92-88 lead with 12 seconds to play. On the other end, Glen Oaks was called for a questionable foul on a Laker 3-point attempt. The Lakers connected on all three foul shots to trail by a point with seven seconds remaining.
Jamison made a trip to the line after being fouled on the inbound, making both with six seconds on the clock to make it a 3-point game. Lake Land's Payton Weemer, who had a game-high 25 points, knocked down a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to send the game to overtime at 94-94.
Lake Land got on the board first in OT with an uncontested layup. Humphrey Jr. hit a foul shot on the other end to cut it to one. A pair of made foul shots by Lakeland extended the lead to four. Humphrey Jr. scored in the paint to cut it to one again. Lakeland pushed it to 100-97 after a pair of made foul shots before Roach tied the game with a triple at the 2:32 mark. But the Lakers would close out bonus time with a 12-6 run to finish off the Vikings.
Smith, Moore, and Humphrey Jr. each scored 15 points for the Vikings. Phillips finished with 14, and Baugh and Jamison both had 10. Keil ended the night with nine points. Roach led the team with seven assists, while Humphrey Jr. completed a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Glen Oaks shot 52.7 percent from the field for the game and 62.5 percent from 3-point land (15-for-24).
Glen Oaks slipped to 3-2 overall with the loss.
