Viking men pound Ancilla at home
GOCC leaves no doubt in conference rout.
The Glen Oaks Community College men's basketball team is playing its best basketball at the right time of the season. Saturday, that was on full display as the Vikings completely overwhelmed visiting Marian University's Ancilla College to the tune of 97-65.
It was the second straight blowout victory for Head Coach Mike Elliott's squad, and all eight players made major contributions as the Viking sideline was all smiles all afternoon.
Once again it was Daivion Boleware who led the team with a game-high 21 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field with three 3-pointers. A 19-4 run to open the game was an indication that this one was likely going to be over before halftime. The Vikings built the lead to 46-28 by the break.
Lavonta Ash made 8 of 12 shots from the floor for 16 points, Darrius Roach and Jordan Turner each had 13, Tyler Swanwick registered 12 and Shane Handlon posted 10. Both Derek Anderson and Tylan Harris knocked down a pair of 3-pointer for six points apiece.
Glen Oaks (14-9, 5-3 MCCAA Western Conference) shot 51.4 percent from the game and 40 percent from behind the arc. The Vikings absolutely dominated the boards, beating Ancilla 12-6 on the offensive glass and 35-22 on the defensive end. The Chargers dropped to 10-12 overall and 2-6 in the Western Conference.
Boleware finished with 15 rebounds, Handlon pulled down nine and Ash had seven. Swanwick paced the Vikings with three steals, while Handlon, Turner and Ash tied for a team-best four assists.
The win positions Glen Oaks in a tie for second place with Southwestern Michigan in the Western Conference behind Kalamazoo Valley, which is 19-5 overall and 8-0 in league play.
