KVCC men win at Glen Oaks
MCCAA Western Conference-leading Cougars stay undefeated in league play.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College turned a three-point halftime lead into a 20-point cushion quickly in the second quarter en route to a 97-85 road win over the Glen Oaks men's basketball team Saturday.
After trailing for a good chunk of the first half, a Daivion Boleware 3-pointer gave the Vikings a 24-23 lead. Darrius Roach found Lavonta Ash in transition and Ash scored under the rim again for a 28-25 advantage with 6:21 to play in the half. Tyler Swanwick's 3-pointer made it a 31-27 GOCC lead moments later — the team's biggest of the game.
KVCC (17-5, 6-0), however, managed to answer quickly, capitalizing on Viking turnovers, knocking down a triple and getting some easy looks down low to recapture a six-point lead. A fadeaway from behind the arc at the buzzer by Boleware cut it to 40-37.
The Cougars jumped on Glen Oaks to start the second half with a 14-0 run before Tylan Harris hit back-to-back 3-pointers. But every time the Vikings came up with a big bucket or two to start getting it closer to single digits, KVCC executed on the other end, including deep balls by Ashton Atwater and dunks by Jaylin Fox and John Sweeney.
Following a triple by Boleware, a pair of free throws by Roach finally got Glen Oaks to within nine points with just under 10 minutes to play. Atwater connected from long range for KVCC on the next trip down the court and the Vikings Derek Anderson did the same to remain nine points behind.
A Boleware 3-pointer cut it to six but KVCC made too many layups down the stretch to push the lead back up to 17 and remain comfortably in control the rest of the way.
Boleware led all scorers with 25 points and 18 rebounds (16 defensive), Darrius Roach poured in 19 points and Harris ended the game with 15. Anderson and Ash each notched eight points, Swanwick added five, Jordan Turner had three and Shane Handlon registered two.
Glen Oaks slipped to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference.
