Ancilla seals win with late 3-pointer
Glen Oaks comes up short on the road.
After trailing by nine points at halftime, the Glen Oaks men's basketball team chipped away in the second half to eventually secure a lead in the final seconds Wednesday night at Marian University's Ancilla College. But the Chargers came up with a clutch 3-point basket with 2.4 seconds to play to pull the rug out from underneath the Vikings in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association opener for both squads.
Daivion Boleware led the Vikings with a 20-point, 13-rebound night, while Darrius Roach (11) and Jordan Turner (10) also reached double figures. Roach added four rebounds and an assist, and Turner registered four boards, an assist, a steal and one block.
Tyler Swanwick tossed in eight points to go with two rebounds, two assists and a steal, Lavonta Ash produced five points and three boards, and both Tylan Harris and Shane Handlon scored four points. Harris added six assists and three rebounds, while Handlon had four boards and a block.
The Vikings trailed 39-30 at the break and fell further behind, 45-34, at the 15:46 mark in the second half following an Ancilla 3-pointer. Swanwick drained a triple shortly after to cut the deficit back down to single digits. Turner hit a jumper on the next trip down the floor to make it a six-point game.
Glen Oaks kept rolling as Handlon found Roach slashing down the lane for a layup and Boleware cleaned up his own miss with a putback at the 12:38 mark to make it a one-possession contest. A minute later, Boleware hit a jumper from the top of the key to tie the game at 45-45.
Handlon grabbed a long offensive rebound and took it to the bucket to give the Vikings a 47-45 advantage with 10:31 to play. It was back and forth the rest of the way and the game was knotted up at 63-63 with 1:35 remaining.
Harris drew a foul at midcourt and took advantage of the bonus, hitting both free throws for a 65-63 lead with 1:26 on the clock. The Chargers missed three shots on the other end but Glen Oaks couldn't capitalize on its next two trips down the floor, missing the front end of a pair of one-and-ones.
And after a solid defensive stand, the Vikings watched as a late 3-point bucket went through off an inbounds play. Time ran out on Glen Oaks, which couldn't get a shot off before the horn.
Ancilla (9-6) has now won eight out of its last nine games and improved to 9-6 overall. Glen Oaks slipped to 9-7 overall and returns home Saturday against Lake Michigan College at 3 p.m.
