No. 1 Parkland escapes vs. Glen Oaks men
Vikings upset bid falls short
Returning to action after the holiday break, the Glen Oaks men's basketball team made a statement Saturday at home, even if the outcome wasn't the desired one.
After falling behind 41-29 by halftime, the Vikings flipped a switch in the second half against top-ranked Parkland (NJCAA Division II), regained the lead several times and came up a possession short, 77-73.
Daivion Boleware led GOCC (8-6) with 19 points, Tylan Harris and Darrius Roach each finished with 14, and Jordan Turner reached double figures with 13.
The Vikings started the second half strong and a Harris 3-pointer, followed by athletic moves to the bucket by Roach and Turner, put GOCC ahead 48-47. It would remain tight the rest of the way with several lead changes, which included a 70-65 advantage by the Vikings after another Harris triple with 4:42 remaining in the game.
In the end, turnovers and missed free throws by Glen Oaks (7-for-14) helped an undefeated Parkland squad, which managed to handle a late full-court press, flip the script one last time.
Shane Handlon and Tyler Swanwick added six points apiece for Glen Oaks and Derek Anderson chipped in two. Boleware paced the Vikings with 13 rebounds and he also recorded two steals and a block. Handlon and Roach both grabbed five boards.
The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field and connected on 9 of 24 (37.5%) 3-point attempts.
Glen Oaks returns home Wednesday, Jan. 10 against Jackson College.
