Glen Oaks men outlast Olive-Harvey
Vikings connect from deep in hoops victory
Boosted by a barrage of 3-pointers by sophomore guard Jaylen Coon, the Glen Oaks men's basketball team improved to 5-1 Friday after a 102-88 victory at home over over Olive-Harvey College.
The Vikings jumped out to a 28-15 advantage with 11:02 to play in the first half following a pair of triples from Coon, who finished with a game-high 28 points, which included a 7-for-9 effort from behind the arc. Coon knocked down five of those in the first half. Glen Oaks would take a 55-42 lead into the halftime break.
Daivion Boleware registered 20 points — 14 of which came in the first half. A Coon drive to the bucket and a pair of Boleware free throws helped Glen Oaks build a double digit lead just before halftime after Olive-Harvey got within nine with around a minute to play.
Olive-Harvey kept pressing in the second half and caused plenty of trouble for the Vikings, churning out points off turnovers to cut the defecit down to 77-73 with 8:35 remaining. Coon helped stop the bleeding with another 3-pointer, Jaiquan Edwards attacked the basked for a field goal and Tylan Harris hit a big-time 3-pointer, and Coon drove to the bucket to reastablish a 13-point lead.
Boleware scored under the hoop and then got to the line, making both foul shots to keep the Vikings out front comfortably, 97-84, with 1:28 left in the game. Coon's last three points came via an and-one, capping his efficient night, with 48 seconds left.
Harris ended the game with 19 points, three rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block. Edwards had a double-double with 16 points, 13 boards and two blocks. Boleware grabbed 12 rebounds (10 defensive) and recorded four assists. Coon added six rebounds and a pair of assists.
Both Tyler Swanwick and Lavonta Ash had six points. Swanwick also chipped in eight rebounds, five assists, a steal and two blocks. Ash filled out his line with four boards, a steal and a block.
Rounding out the production for Glen Oaks were Shane Handlon, who had five points, a rebound, one assist and two steals, and Darrius Roach, who recorded two points, two boards, three assists, one steal and two blocks.
