GOCC men fall on the road
Vikings lose first game to undefeated Parkland
The Glen Oaks men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, 99-76, at undefeated Parkland Community College.
Jaiquan Edwards led the Vikings with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Jaylen Coon had 12 points, Shane Handlon and Daivion Boleware added 11 apiece, Darrius Roach finished with nine, Lavonta Ash chipped in eight, and Tylan Harris hit a 3-pointer.
Boleware also registered six rebounds, while Roach pulled down four.
The Vikings (4-1) shot 41.2 percent from the field for the game compared to Parkland's 62.9 percent. Both teams made 12 free throws and Parkland edged GOCC 9-8 in 3-pointers made.
Glen Oaks took the lead at the 14:46 mark in the first half after Boleware knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 13-12 advantage. A Roach layup made it 15-12 30 seconds later. Parkland answered with a three before an Edwards bucket at the rim put GOCC back in front 17-15. Glen Oaks would keep the lead until Parkland hit a triple at 9:32 to give the home team a 24-21 edge. Parkland increased that cushion to as much as 15 before Coon and Edwards hit 3-pointers, a Boleware field goal and three free throws by Handlon closed the gap to 49-42 by halftime.
But the Vikings failed to score in the first two minutes of the second half and Parkland took advantage at close range to go back up by 13. A pair of Coon foul shots and a 3-pointer cut the deficit to four points with 14:43 to play. A Handlon jumper got GOCC to within four points at 11:09, but that's as close as the Vikings would get.
Glen Oaks plays again Friday at 7 p.m. at home against Olive Harvey.
