In a pair of seven-inning MCCAA contest at home Friday, the Glen Oaks Community College baseball team battled for a pair of important wins.
Game 1
Glen Oaks 3, Lake Michigan College 1
Andrew Onuegbu started the game for Glen Oaks Community College and recorded 18 outs in a fine outing on the mound with some help of clutch hitting by his teammates.
Lake Michigan Community College opened the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. Jayden Hamilton singled to center field on the tenth pitch of the at-bat, which helped Glen Oaks tie the game at one in the bottom of the fourth.
The Vikings jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Peyton Simmons singled up the middle, and Hamilton grounded out, each scoring one run.
Onuegbu allowed three hits and one run over six innings, striking out five and walking three. Wolfe took the loss for Lake Michigan Community College. The lefty went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out six and walking three. Gavin Wickham collected the save.
Simmons, Corbin White, Hamilton, and Daniel Vizthum each collected one hit for Glen Oaks. Simmons and Hamilton each drove in one run for the Vikings.
Game 2
Glen Oaks 5, Lake Michigan College 4
Glen Oaks was the first to get on the board in the second when Logan O'Malley drew a walk, scoring one run.
Lake Michigan Community College tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a single by Meyers, and a ground out by Butcher.
The Vikings took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. O'Malley singled, scoring one run, to give GOCC the upper hand, 3-2.
Jackson Stewart earned the win for Glen Oaks as the righty surrendered one hit and two runs (one earned) over two innings, striking out none and walking four. Jayden Sloniker started on the hill for GOCC and he gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out five and walking three. Gavin Wickham collected the save.
O'Malley led the Vikings with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The center fielder went 1-for-2 on the day. Braeden Becker led Glen Oaks with two hits in two at bats. The Vikings had patience at the plate, amassing 11 walks for the game. Caleb Mallory, Daniel Vizthum, O'Malley, and Becker led the team with two free passes each. Glen Oaks stole three bases in the game.
Hamilton scored on a walk in the sixth and Becker came home on a wild pitch moments later to give the Vikings a 5-2 advantage. LMC tacked on two runs in the seventh but a fly ball to Becker in right field ended the game.
